Singulair Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Montelukast sodium

Montelukast (Singulair®) helps to treat asthma symptoms (coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness) and control your asthma. You can not used Singulair medicine to treat sudden asthma attack, Because it does not provide instant relief. Singulair medicine works only when we will used regular basis and then medicine help to reduce inflammation and prevent asthma attacks. This drug is also used to treat seasonal allergies, like hay fever. You can improves asthma and hay fever symptoms by blocking substances in the body known as leukotrienes.

Singulair Dosage

  • For asthama attack, you should take usual dose 10-milligram tablet once a day in the evening.
  • For allergies, you should take usual dose 10-milligram tablet once a day and you can take any time.

Uses of Singulair

  • Singulair is used to treat asthma attacks.
  • Singulair is also used in the treatment of seasonal nasal allergies.
  • The medicine may also used to treat hayfever symptoms.

Side Effects of Singulair

Before taking this medicine, Discuss with your doctor about the possible side effects. The following side effects that may occur during asthma treatment include:

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)

Warnings and precautions before taking Singulair:

  • If you have liver disease, then tell your doctor before using this drug.
  • Do not stop medicine without taking to your doctor. your doctor may be decrease the dosage of other asthma medications such as include inhaled steroids. If your asthma symptoms get worse or you develop a rash, numbness, or heart problems as you reduce your dose of steroids, consult with your doctor.
  • After taking Singulair If you have difficulty breathing or find that you need your orally inhaled bronchodilator more often than usual (or require more puffs than prescribed), consult with your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking any other drugs with Singulair medicine, Consultis with your doctor. Because it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effect of Singulair medicine or it may cause to the other serious effect. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Singulair with the following:

  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rimactane)
  • thyroid hormones
  • sedative hypnotics
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents
  • benzodiazepines
  • decongestants.
Overdose

After taking Singulair medicine, If you feel that overdose is suspected. Contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Singulair overdose may include:

  • thirst
  • somnolence
  • mydriasis
  • hyperkinesia
  • abdominal pain.
